On 31 March 2025, we lost a dear friend and a respected member of the global Internet community. Nigel Hickson passed away after a long illness. He was an ICANN organization staff member for eight years and was involved in Internet policy development for many decades. He most recently served as Vice Chair of ICANN’s Governmental Advisory Committee.

The Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) advises the ICANN Board on public issues, particularly in areas where ICANN policies intersect with both national laws and international agreements. On 11 February 2025, ICANN became aware of a successful phishing attack on our @ICANN X account. The attacker posted three malicious messages, which have since been taken down by X. We worked with X to restore full access to the account on 3 March 2025, and following internal security testing, fully restored service on 6 March. ICANN uses multi-factor authentication on all social media platforms and has confirmed that none of our other social media accounts have been impacted.

The African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC) has faced an ongoing crisis of governance. ICANN has been and continues to closely monitor the situation and offers AFRINIC support and advice where we can do so, and ICANN is hopeful that the recent developments taken in Mauritius will bring AFRINIC’s governance back to a steady state.
